Walter Gropius.

Walter Gropius was a German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School, who is regarded as one of the masters of modern architecture.

Now art and production can be recognised as individual industries and also industries that can work hand in hand with each other.

This is the Bauhaus Building created by Walter Gropius. It was built in Dessau, Germany. The front of the classroom block is composed of horizontal windows, whose function is to ensure adequate lighting, and the apartments, shows individual openings designed to increase privacy. The workshops have a significant glass front, allowing maximum light and view of the interior from outside. They were very large flat roofs, back then there was almost no experience with similar constructions. This means that the building of the roofs had several problems.

What is Bauhaus?

The name ‘Bauhaus’ originates from Germany and it means “To Build” “House” together these words in German mean ‘Bauhaus’. Before the war in 1919, Bauhaus was a school that was invented for people to learn how to build, create and invent products. Walter Gropius was the man whom founded this school to try to help combine the concepts of art, sculpture, building, architecture and painting rather than keeping them separate and individual arts. They wanted to be able to produce products that were useful in the “New system of living” and also aesthetically pleasing.

Students at Bauhaus learnt about colour theory, materials and formal relationships for more specialised studies and these lessons would be taught by artists themselves such as Vasily Kandinsky, Josef Albers and Paul Klee. After learning about the theory the students was then allowed to go into workshops which contained Metal and Wood work, Cabinet making, Weaving, Textiles, Pottery, Typography and Wall Painting and decorating.

Bauhaus Intro.

We have been given a project to research Bauhaus and to find four examples of each bullet points…

  • Painting or photography
  • Furniture
  • Ceramics, metalware, glassware or similar
  • Architecture
  • Book Illustration/typography

Once we have found all of these images; along with the dates and titles, we have to then go onwards to find out the mean of the word “Bauhaus” and explain it in full detail giving examples at the same time. After all of this we are to create our own “New system of living” by building our own new object.

Finally we will create our own Bauhaus Cafe with contemporary Bauhaus styled furniture and architecture. We will have to create and design our ideas for the cafe on paper and then we will start to use 3DS to create the final piece of work.

Location of Film.

Our film is set in Laurence’s garage. We thought that this would be a good scene, since it is dark and gloomy and would fit well with our short film. Also filming took place outside Tesco, for this we took an afternoon out to complete this filming.

Filming, risks and precautions.

Through out the filming process we didn’t encounter many risks. The main precaution we took was with the drill; we didn’t have it plugged in or turned on at any time apart from when it was used once in a scene and we made sure it was at least a metre away from the other actors.

We also made sure that we had a clear working space, so myself and Becca or anyone else filming had nothing in their path so they did not trip during the scene.

When we were at and around Tesco we made sure we watched out step once again, because the ground happened to be very muddy and slippery from the rain. Also we had to take precautions on the public since they were around us at the time of us filming, so we made sure we weren’t in the way and causing a disruption.

Film (Editing) and Final Film.

Through out this filming process we all at some point were involved with the editing and creation of ideas to help the film come together. The two main editors were Rhys and Laurence; myself, Becca and Jonny all contributed with small details of the editing, such as: organisation of the clips, colour, sound, effect and the look of the film overall.

When we started putting the last few scenes in the short film, we had to try and make it all fit in together so that all the different clips worked together and went smoothly. Once again I was apart of this process, including Rhys and Laurence.

Filming Day 2.

Last Thursday, myself and my group filmed the last few scenes for the flashback part of our short film. Becca and I used our makeup to create each character. For both Laurence and Rhys we made them look beaten and distressed, whereas with Jonny I made him look dirty and bruised his hands up. We had to make the makeup quite dark so that the camera would pick it up properly on film.

After all the makeup was done we started to set up for the rest of our garage scene. Then went through the script and started to piece together the ideas for the last couple of scenes; once we had a clear idea of what we wanted to do we started to think about the camera angles.

Myself and Becca done most of the filming on these scenes, coming up with new and creative angles and movements for the camera. We wanted to make the audience feel engaged and involved in some of the action scenes so we moved the camera with the actors: Rhys, Laurence and Jonny.
